First-Generation Twins
I still remember when my sister and I were applying to college. We were identical first-generation twins, born to parents who were unfamiliar with the complexities of the US educational system. They had always pushed us to do well in school, but none of us had prepared for the challenge of figuring out the convoluted admissions process. Although the road was difficult, my sister and I were determined to excel.
We looked to each other for direction and support. Our resolve served as an unbreakable link that propelled us further. We poured over university catalogs (back then, the internet was in its infancy!) for hours to understand the admissions process. Even though it was overwhelming, we didn't let it stop us.
Late nights were the norm as we crafted our college essays. We pushed each other to go farther — to capture the essence of who we were and what we wanted to be.
Anxiety increased as our deadlines approached. We questioned if our efforts would be worthwhile. The fear of disappointment was palpable. But we took comfort in knowing that we had given it our best shot.
Then came the crucial day, when the admission letters started to stream in. We huddled around the kitchen table and carefully opened each one. As we read the lines confirming our acceptance into the same college, tears of delight streamed down our faces.
I will never forget that moment and wanted to share it with the First Foundation community. Based on that experience, I firmly believe that any challenge can be surmounted with tenacity, dedication, and peer support.
