Get Involved!

I entered my university as a first-generation Mexican-American. I was eager to exert a powerful, positive influence on underrepresented Latino groups. These groups were change accelerators; they provided me with a community of people who shared my experiences and goals. My involvement in Latino student organizations was critical in raising our collective voices and working for social change. We held marches, panel discussions, and cultural events. These events helped us advocate for legislation that addressed these needs.

I also became involved in research projects that aimed to shed light on the issues affecting underserved Latino populations. Collaborating with professors and fellow students, we conducted studies on healthcare disparities, educational inequities, and socioeconomic challenges. Through our research, we aimed to generate knowledge that could inform policy changes and foster equity.

My involvement in Latino student organizations not only allowed me to assist underserved populations but also empowered me to become a leader within my community. I took on roles such as organizing events, mentoring younger students, and advocating for increased diversity on campus. I became a voice for underrepresented individuals. I strove to ensure that their needs were recognized by the university administration.

I am humbled by the insights that I gained from my involvement in Latino student groups and undergraduate research. I would encourage everyone who reads my story to join these efforts in college. The sense of community and shared purpose drove me beyond my comfort zone in the service of others.
