Don’t Let ESL Barriers Stop You
I came from an immigrant family that did not speak English very well. I served as their interpreter and trailblazer. That was a lot of responsibility for a young girl – but I embraced it because I knew that a college degree could not only help me but also my family.
My difficulties as the first, first-gen student in my family to apply to college taught me essential lessons about tenacity, self-reliance, and the value of perseverance. I had to forge my own path. While it was difficult, it also provided me with opportunities for personal development and self-discovery. I earned the confidence to follow my dreams. Most importantly, I believe that I have become a pioneer for future generations in my family to follow my example.
I am immensely proud of my experience as a first-generation college student. It has instilled in me a heartfelt appreciation for the transformational potential of a college education.
