An Unlikely Transition
College was the furthest thing from my mind when I finished high school. Being a first-generation student, I was expected to navigate the complexity of the educational system on my own – and I really had no desire to do so. It was oppressive to consider spending additional time in lectures and classrooms learning about things that didn't excite me.
That’s why I initially chose a different path in life rather than getting a college degree. During that time, I worked at a neighborhood barbershop instead. Mr. Rodriguez, the owner, saw something in me that I hadn't really seen in myself: my intelligence and potential. He urged me to further my schooling and look for options outside of the shop. I first refused, insisting that I could prosper without a college education.
But Mr. Rodriguez continued to encourage me. He made me examine my limitations and cast doubt on my preconceptions. When I had trouble believing in myself, he had faith in me. His words crept into my mind gradually, and I started to think about the opportunities that a college education would provide.
I hesitantly began the college application process and Mr. Rodriguez was even kind enough to help me pay some of the application fees. Long story short, I was accepted into a local college and am now thinking of applying to business school.
I will always look back on Mr. Rodriguez with admiration. My life's course was altered by his faith in my abilities. I hope that my account will do the same for you.
