ALAS

I credit my success throughout the college application process as a first generation Venezuelan-American female to my school’s Association of Latin American Students (ALAS). Little did I know that this organization would become my guiding light throughout this journey. ALAS offered tools and guidance that were critical for success. I would encourage any high school student who is reading my story to enroll in ALAS or start a chapter.

ALAS provided me with a network of people who believed in my ability and shared my experiences as a Latinx student. I reached out to mentors who had traveled a similar journey. They gave me advice, answered my concerns, and helped me understand the nuances of the college application process. Their guidance and encouragement showed me the way forward.

ALAS also offered workshops and seminars to empower me with skills to navigate the college admissions process. These initiatives covered a wide range of issues, including selecting the correct institution and writing effective personal statements. They even showed me financial assistance possibilities. With their support, I grew into a successful Latinx college student…and graduate! I now work with local high schools to help establish ALAS chapters and nurture the next generation of Latinx students.
