Overcoming Learning Challenges

As an immigrant, I faced many difficulties on my path to college. I came to this country full of hope, but I also carried a burden that most people couldn't see: a learning disability that made pursuing an education quite challenging. In my school assignments, letters appeared to be mixed up with numbers. The educational system used a language that I was unable to understand. Self-doubt and frustration overwhelmed me.

Nevertheless, my parents’ unconditional love wouldn't let me give in to the restrictions that came with my condition. In spite of the obstacles in my way, they helped me.

I persisted through high school…often putting in twice as much effort as my peers to get the same outcome. I dared to aim higher. And so I took a risk and applied to college. When the acceptance notifications came, I was overjoyed beyond words. I contacted each school to determine which one would offer the best resources for students like myself. The staff members at the school I selected were attentive, experienced with working with students who had my LD, and very understanding.

Together, we came up with an education plan that gave me access to the accommodations I required. I received note-taking services, extra time on tests, and alternate formats for course materials. These concessions were not a crutch; rather, they served as the framework that allowed me to successfully negotiate the challenges of higher education.

I will always be grateful for the significant influence that the Office of Disability Services made on my college career and life.
