My Faith Community

I am a Mexican-American immigrant who grew up in Los Angeles. As a student at a public high school, I experienced firsthand my friends' perseverance and tenacity as we all confronted hurdles on our path to college. During this time, my church emerged as an unexpected source of invaluable support during this time. This community was made up of caring people who knew my challenges. When they found out about my plans to attend college, they jumped at the chance to help. The church held fundraisers and community activities with the goal of assisting students like me on our path to higher education. They helped cover my college application expenses, which relieved a big burden off of my family.

Their assistance extended beyond financial aid. My church instilled in me a profound appreciation for the power of community. I am inspired by their generosity and am determined to pay it forward. I hope to encourage and assist future generations of students in similar situations, as my local church community has done for me. Their faith in my abilities left an unforgettable imprint on my life.
