Overcoming Prejudice

Thank you for the opportunity to share my story with others who are facing similar situations. I hope it can help them know that they are not alone and that it is possible to succeed as a first gen college student.

My initial step in combating bias against first gen students was to explore support networks to assist me with the college admissions process. I met with my high school's guidance counselor in the hopes of finding someone who believed in me and could assist me in navigating the complex world of college admissions. It was a turning point. My counselor became an ally, offering valuable advice and connecting me with scholarship opportunities.

My struggle against prejudice, however, did not end with requesting assistance. I decided to tackle the preconceptions and misunderstandings that haunted me. I became involved in groups and organizations that valued diversity and encouraged inclusion. I engaged in these initiatives both in high school and throughout college.

Also, my personal statement proved to be an effective instrument in my fight against prejudice against first gen students. I poured my heart into writing a story that emphasized not just my academic successes but also the challenges that I experienced as a Latino student. I explained how those experiences had transformed me into a resilient and caring person. I refused to let prejudices limit me and I hope that everyone who reads this story on First Foundation’s site will be encouraged to succeed.
