From the Inner-City to U Chicago
As a Puerto Rican high school student growing up in a mostly non-Hispanic environment, I experienced my share of prejudice. The challenges I faced when applying to colleges seemed overwhelming at times. But, equipped with a burning desire to succeed, I stood up against bigotry and refused to let it dictate my destiny.
As I began to consider my college options in my junior year of high school, I observed a lack of support and understanding from some of my professors and friends. They questioned my ability to gain admission to a prominent university. Their subtle remarks and preconceived notions irritated me, but I refused to let their negativity win. Instead, it served as fire for my drive to prove them wrong.
Today, I stand proudly as a U Chicago graduate who manages a successful anti-poverty organization. Who says dreams can’t come true?
