Don’t Be Afraid to Share Your Journey
My path to where I am now as a Guatemalan immigrant has been a whirlwind. When I was a baby, one of my parents passed away. My single father was left to raise me with the help of some extended family. As a child, I had a large family full of aunts and uncles, each of them developed into my pillars of support and motivated me to do well in school. They encouraged me to never accept mediocrity.
My extended family recognized in me the potential that I found difficult to see in myself and I eventually became the valedictorian of both my middle school and high school. When it came time to submit my college applications, I wrote about my experiences as a young Latina woman both inside and outside of the classroom.
Don’t be afraid to share your journey. It can make all the difference. Looking back, I believe that it helped contribute to my acceptance to my dream school. I am wishing anyone who reads this the best of success throughout this path.
